Modul Add Math

Inspirasi daripada Cikgu Zul, aku juga ingin menghasilkan modul Add Math ku sendiri. Tapi berbanding dengan Zul, aku tidak sekreatif dia dalam penghasilan soalan. Aku berasa soalan-soalan dalam buku rujukan sudah berlambak di pasaran. Bukan saja sudah berlambak, malah bagus-bagus juga. Jadi apa yang harus aku lakukan?

Bak kata Picasso; " Good artist copy. Great artist steal" Jadi cara termudah bagiku adalah 'mengklonkan' ia.

Sebenarnya aku sendiri pun 'tiada strategi', hanya beli buku revisi yang sesuai, dan hanya belajar dari buku itu. Ia agak efektif , sesuai dengan aku yang 'sibuk' (malas) ini hehe. Tapi untuk 'menjual' sesuatu, aku haruslah mencipta sesuatu yang original kan. Tak gitu?

Aku harus mencipta strategiku sendiri. Bagaimana ya?

Aku akui aku memang malasa untuk 're-produce' benda (soalan) yang sudah ada di pasaran. Bagaimana aku boleh menjadi unik?

Bagiku, Add Math umpama seni. Aku hanya boleh mengajar taktikal, tapi seninya harus datang dari sendiri, Jadi bagaimana harus aku menulis mengenai seni dan kreativiti dalam Add Math?

Aku ada juga terfikir untuk menyusun kembali bab-bab tertentu; bermula dengan topik asas dan mudah dulu seperti Simultaneous Equation, atau Index. Daripada membabi-buta mengikut sekolah/silibus, susunan kronologikal gitu, yang aku rasa kurang menitik beratkan prioriti subjek, yang mana lebih penting dan yang kurang penting. Ini lebih sesuai, kerana aku kan ingin mencipta sesuatu yang segar, dan efektif.

About : Add Math Tutor

Salam. Nama saya Zainal Zulia. Lahir pada 6 September 1979. Seorang tutor Add Math sepenuh masa. Dan Add Math adalah bidang pengkhususan saya. Saya sudah mengajar beratus pelajar, dari tahun 2005 lagi (6 tahun). Pelajar-pelajar saya kebanyakkan terdiri dari golongan 'tuisyen peribadi' (one to one), dan juga pelajar pusat tuisyen. Kawasan saya di sekitar Shah Alam, Subang dan Sri Damanasara.

Diantara pusat tuisyen yang pernah saya mengajar (dan masih mengajar) adalah di Pulau Ilmu (Subang Perdana) dan Sri Tropika (Subang Perdana). Insyallah, jika tiada aral melintang, saya akan menubuhkan institut saya sendiri di Subang Murni tahun 2012, khusus untuk subjek Sains dan Matematik.

Dalam AddMathTutor.com ini, saya akan ceritakan perkembangan terbaru, serta tips-tips Add Math untuk SPM. Jika ada kemusykilan, sila utarakan kepada saya ya. Usah malu usah segan. Insyallah saya akan membantu anda menjawabnya menggunakan video, atau penulisan blog.

Saya juga menggalakkan sesiapa guru diluar sana yang berminat untuk berkongsi tips menulis di web ini juga. 

Add Math adalah subjek yang sukar tapi penting, Adalah harus diingatkan pentingnya syarat kelayakkan mengambil Add Math adalah keputusan PMRnya mendapat A dalam Sains dan Matematik. Algebra adalah bahasa asas dalam subjek ini, dan pelajar haruslah menguasainya terlebih dahulu.

Untuk lulus, saya menekankan pelajar untuk menjawap soalan-soalan dari Paper 2 ini mengikut turutan:

1. Sec A : Simultaneous Equation (5 markah)
2. Sec C : Index (10 markah)
3. Sec C : Solution of Triangles (10 markah)
4. Sec B : Linear Law (10 markah)
5. Sec A : Vector (8 markah)

Saya kategorikan soalan-soalan di atas sebagai 'mudah' dan 'tetap keluar'. Dan mengulanginya, sambil mempelajari topik lain. Ingat ya, ini hanya untuk LULUS.

60 Months Ago

It has been 60 months of teaching, officially. Unofficially, 72 months. Officially means I recorded all my classes data into Microsoft Excel. My pre-recorded students was few : Afnan (Bidin's brother), that 3 guys group in Pandan, Cheras (can't remember their names), the girls in Sekolah Sains Cheras (lasted only a month) and Fazal from Ampang (how i remember his 'troubled' family, haha). What a journey. 

For my post-recorded students, Ain from Kg Subang, was the first one. Introduced by agent, Cikgu Zul (now become partner already!). I remember paying him half of the income (RM200 out of RM400) for the first month as commission. And I remember vividly how Ain gave me idea of teaching ONLY ADD MATH.

Prior to that, I has been teaching all 4 subjects : Add Math, Mod Math, Physics and Chemistry. No doubt I liked all the subjects, but my only love was only Add Math. Teaching other than Add Math drains me, without I realised it ( hence explains my 'few' classes). But teaching Add Math really empowers me. I feel excited, and passionate.

For Ain, she asked me to teach both; Add Math & Physics. I did teach her for our first class. Then, next week, for our 2nd class, she told me quite frankly;

                     "Cikgu, saya nak belajar Add Math aje dengan Cikgu. Saya seronok dan faham. Tapi Physics tak payah la kot. Saya langsung tak paham apa cikgu ajar."

You know what, i did feel embarrassed a bit ( and a disappointed : decreased fee!), but my major feelings was; i feel relief and joyful! Since the day, I've made a bold decision ; I want to teach Add Math (first priority), and Mod Math (2nd). Only both subject. No Physics and Chemistry anymore.

So, since 60 month ago, thanks to Ain, I've found my niche. Alhamdulillah, my classes schedule has been full ever since. Now I am sought-after Add Math tutor!

Science & Math Institution

Alhamdulillah. Yesterday I successfully did my first ever Add Math Seminar, 2nd leg. Again, thank u to Mona & Kak Shahirah (Tropika Team) for making this thing happened. And to all of my students, thank u also. Gud luck & love u all.

Of course, this kind of experience strengthen my confidence & courage to become a better & better tutor. After 6 years of tutoring, I believe in myself more now. Particularly in classroom teaching.

The students : Yana, Liza, Amoi (fatinah), Syah, Hanif, Shareen, Akma, Amir, Muaz, Afnan, Amin, Wan, Akmal Jumbo, Amer (Anje), Hafiz (OK), Irfan, Daniel & Ariff.

Tonite, me, Cikgu Zul & Cikgu Fizo will have a meeting to discuss our business venture of taking over Subang 2's Pulau Ilmu. We've planned to build our own since 2 years back, and had a several problem ever since. But the dream is still intact.

We've agreed to name it as 'Science & Math Institute'. It is really a big name and ambitious one, but so does our vision. Insyallah, hopefully our discussion at Pak Lah's tonite turn well.

Personally, my target for post-married income is to be 5-digit . With or without them, I'll proceed anyway. If I'm doing it alone, I will open it at my future home at Subang Murni. Hopefully I will open it with them, as both Zul, & Fizo are the best tutor in their own field.

I believe in abundance. I believe in synergy. Wish me luck.

Growth

Ramai orang cakap 'growth' adalah sesuatu yang penting, dan harus dicapai dengan secepat mungkin. Seperti 'quick fix', contohnya syarikat yang baru ditubuhkan harus segera mendapat keuntungan, atau pabila murid pergi tuisyen, harus segera mendapat A. Ini tidak menjadi kesalahan, malah ia perkara yang baik dan bagus apabila dicapai. Tetapi ia menjadi masalah apabila 'menjadi prioriti', ie menjadi keutamaan berbanding perkara yang lebih asas, seperti keserasian antara pekerja (dalam contoh syarikat baru tadi), atau keseronokan pelajar (contoh murid tuisyen).

Dalam pembacaan buku 'Built to Last' (Jim Collins 1994), beliau ada menggariskan beberapa kualiti 'Great Companies' (HP, Merck, Sony, Disney, 3M) berbanding 'Comparison Companies' (Bristol Myers, Colgate, Texas Instrument). Tulisnya, 'Great Companies ini tidak fokus kepada 'growth' semata, contohnya HP (Hewlett & Packard) tidak mahu menerima bantuan 'venture capitalist' dan pinjaman dari bank,(sedangkan ramai orang rebutkannya) kerana khuatir 'growth' yang terlalu cepat akan memusnahkan nilai-nilai kemanusian dalam syarikatnya. Antara nilai-nilai yang ada dalam HP adalah:-

• Respect to individuals (menghormati hak individu)
• Technical contribution (setiap produk mestilah original dan membantu)

Ini tentunya bercanggah dengan kebanyakkan syarikat yang hanya fokus kepada 'expansion' yang cepat, dan keuntungan semata. Syarikat sehebat HP ini lebih fokus kepada nilai-nilai kemanusian yang diterapkan.

Jadi, mana lebih penting ; keseronokan mencari ilmu, atau 'score'dalam peperiksaan dengan kadar segera?

Perguruan : 2

Tahun ini juga tahun terbaik setakat ini. Jadual tuisyen ku penuh, dan kelas di pusat tuisyen juga paling ramai sepanjang 6 tahun pengajaranku. Bagaimana aku boleh improve?

Aku ada menyediakan 'Appraisal Form' sebaik sahaja kelas habis. Murid akan bagi feedback sebegini:-

• A : Faham
• B : Tak berapa faham / faham sikit-sikit
• C : Tak faham langsung

Dengan adanya feedback sebegini, aku akan memantau dan memahami 'pemahaman' mereka secara keseluruhan di dalam kelasku. Aku akan memastikan kesemua / hampir semua murid menulis A, baru aku berpuas hati. Jika separuh menulis A, dan separuh B, aku akan tidak berpuas hati, dan akan ku fikirkan cara lain bagaimana untuk memperbaiki teknik pengajaranku.

Dan alhamdulillah, teknik ini sangat berkesan, kerana ia mengelakkan murid dari berhenti, dan mereka akan faham dan mula enjoy, sekaligus akan mengajak rakan-rakan mereka yang lain menyertai kelas tuisyen ini. Sangat cool.

Mekanisme ini ku pelajari dari buku "Good to Great" oleh Jim Collins. Terimakasih.

Aku juga bercita-cita untuk membuat mekanisme ini untuk pusat tuisyen ku sendiri kelak. Ini juga bagus untuk melatih guru baru menjadi guru yang bagus. Juga sebagai alat saringan, selagi guru belajar menerima feedback dan improve, dia akan berjaya. Jika dia tidak tahan, profession perguruan ini bukanlah untuknya. 

Sangat cool.

Ia juga mekanisme yang tiada noktah. Selamanya dan berterusan.

Perguruan : 1

Perguruan adalah kerjaya yang mulia. Aku sebenarnya tidak pernah bercita-cita mahu menjadi guru. Langsung tidak pernah. Cita-cita asalku mahu menjadi ahli korporat yang kaya dan berjaya. Terasa sangat 'kosong' cita-cita itu. Kerana aku hanya fokus kepada 'apa yang aku dapat', daripada 'apa yang aku mahu beri'.

Aku menjadi tutor sejak 6 tahun yang lalu, selepas saranan Jaja. Minatku pada matematik (terutamanya Add Math), membuatkan ku mahu mencuba. Tapi ia tidak mudah seperti yang disangkakan. Kemahiran dalam matematik tidak menjamin kemahiran dalam mengajar. Aku agak OK dalam pengajaran 'one-to-one', tapi gagal dalam pengajaran kelas seperti di pusat tuisyen.

Seri Buana (TTDI), Pragmatik (TTDI), Mawar (KD), Seri Selayang (Gombak) dan Pulau Ilmu (Subang Perdana) ialah antara beberapa pusat tuisyen yang memecatku kerana kegagalan ku membuat semua pelajar ku 'faham'. Aku agak sedih ketika itu. Kerana baru menyedari 'ketiadaan bakatku' dalam mengajar, walaupun aku sangat meminatinya.

Fast forward ke hari ini : Alhamdulillah. Semalam aku berjaya conduct seminar Add Math ku yang pertama selama 5 jam di Seri Tropika! Ini adalah satu break-thru kepadaku. Terimakasih kepada Mona dan team Tropika kerana menaruh kepercayaan kepadaku. Seri Tropika adalah satu-satunya pusat tuisyen yang 'setia' bersamaku setelah 4 tahun mengajar di sini. Banyak yang aku belajar di sini.

Bagaimana aku boleh improve? Tunggu sambungannya, Insyallah besok.

OK. Lets say I got student enrolled in my house. Then what? How can I keep advertising? Is it enough to send flyers in my neighbourhood, say monthly? From my experience, it's a slow journey. But its ok. I love what I do. Despite that, I want to retain my presence in Subang, by being a resident tutor at Pulau Ilmu and Tropika. Cool.

OK. How about my online presence? How about I update regularly? What service I want to do? Video teaching, seminar promotion, or e-book selling. There is opportunity but it takes time to succeed. But it's a good pair with my AddMath Tutor class, it can work simultaneously with my online presence.

How about working as an agent, tuition agent? To secure my job. I shall promote all the time at tuitionplaza.com. And earn commission. How about that? I would love to, but my lack of interest failing me. What should I do about it.

How about that. I take my own sweet time recruiting tutors. How about that. How about I train them to become part of my team. But this is not my passion. Is it? Can I develop it nonetheless? I am curious to try. Its a wonderful opportunity to unfold. It tedious work, but I think it worthwhile, and always better to work in a team.

Add Math Tutor 3

I had an idea. How about ask Zul to teach Math, and Hafizul Phy/Chem.How about that? But again, it is similar to Pulau Ilmu. OK. What should I do now. I am the one who will teach all? How about that? Since I already improved tutor, how about I teach Math in all forms, to satisfy demand. Is it cool, or what?

The problem is that the volume might be small initially. And I also prefer to teach Add Math only. How about resisting other than Add Math. How about that? Am I able to do it?

I would able to establish my brand name from earlier : "Add Math Tutor". It is still few student and hard initially. But i am sure it is a worthwhile one. How cool.

So, that's it. Just put a banner 'Add Math Tutor', send flyers around neighbourhood (frequently) will do? Is this the strategy?

The harder question is not this, but WHETHER I CAN RESIST OTHER THAN ADD MATH JOBS.

Furthermore, my online presence as AddMathTutor.com really wonderful platform for me. I could update it regularly, so I can market it, as ' I am the Add Math Tutor'.

I can focus on giving flyers in my neighborhood. It would be great. But I think the demand is more in PMR, or even UPSR, rather than Add Math. How about that? BTW, giving flyers in my neighborhood is a great idea.

Am I really open myself to teach other than Add Math? I think I will. Why? I can't resist jobs, of course. OK. Is it OK with that? Which is more important? Am i able to resist other job than Add Math?

Why should I anyway?

I thought my aim is to become "the Best Add Math Tutor in Subang". Would accepting other job will hurt the objective?

Ya. I think so. So what should I do about it? Is is resisting Math job will close my opportunity to have 5-years student through-out?

Ok. Let's define myself. I want to do Premium Add Math Class. It's more than my neighborhood coverage. It is the entire Subang. People from other places will looking for me. How about that?

Is it demand? Is the demand enough to sustain job?

This is hard question. It's not easy to be rigid, right?

Add Math Tutor

I want to have my own classroom titled just that. I just love to have my own crowd. But is it possible to only teach Add Math, without other subject as package? I'm not sure. Or should I focus on building Science & Math Institute? Again, I'm not sure too.

For a beginning, I shall start with AddMath Tutor first. But how? Should I start at my house? At mosque? Wait for Zul/Hafizul to JV? I'm not prefer to wait, as it will delay my progress. So, what should I do now? How about JV with Mona? My instinct said I shall start at my future house at Subang Murni. Shall I?

But if send flyers, as in my experience, it was not so effective. What should I do about it? Put banner front in my house? Conduct a seminar at school. There is oppurtunity to establish my own brand name : AddMathTutor.com . Should I go 100% online? Selling my modul on internet. But what is my competitive advantage? I should have my own center anyway. But does it will conflicting with Tropika & Pulau Ilmu?

This is actually my oppurtunity to become "The Best Add Math Tutor in Subang Melayu". I believe I can. But whatever it is, I MUST have my own center in MY HOUSE!

Ideas

• Honeymoon

How about just driving to Trengganu. We can stop at Kemaman (Nik's house), stay at seashore, go further to Kuala Trengganu (buy kerepok lekor losong), and travel to Pasir Mas, ie Rumah Mek. Then from there, we shall go to Jeli and Penang, before heading to Ipoh, and KL. Probably we take 5 days or one whole week as a journey. It's fun, as I love driving, economical, and meaningful as well. How about that?

• How can I create Science & Math School?

I don't know. It is still unclear. I can't wait for Saufi & Azizul. I must start my own first. But how? OK, what is my really intention & goal? To be the best AddMath Tutor? Or seriously I want to start school ? It must be clear. Ok for a start I want to be the best AddMath Tutor. Please define it thoroughly...

Add Math Tutor

I love teaching Add Math. I even have site for it :AddMathTutor.com and its FB . Particularly to the students that have interest in Math, they like my class very much. Thank U.

One-to-one home tuition is quite relaxing job, and relatively higher pay per hour, compare with tuition center rate. Ya, the rate a bit low, but the satisfaction of teaching in a classroom is more. A bit tiring, but more fun.

I have an intention to start my own tuition center soon, Insyallah. I have wonderful friend cum teammate to start with; Azizul & Hafizul; both are best tutor in their own field.

We want to name it as "Science & Math Institute". Amin.

Pada Januari 2008, aku mula mengajar Add Math kepada John Gan, satu-satunya student cina ku ketika itu.

Markah final exam John ketika itu ; 4%

Kusangkakan John seorang yg lembap/lembam tapi rupanya tidak, malah sebaliknya ; seorang yang pick up cepat tapi extra pemalas.

Parentnya juga adalah orang yg baik dan jujur. Mereka yg suruh aku decide berapa kali kelas seminggu. Selalunya parent yg decide
Aku ngajar 2 kali seminggu.


November - Di kelas terakhirku
Setelah 129 jam dan RM5,160 telah dihabiskan, ibunya Ms Gan bejumpa dgnku dan menyatakan terima kasih atas komitmenku. Dan secara peribadi menyatakan ‘tidak mengharapkan apa keputusan yg cemerlang. Cukup baginya melihatnya anaknya mula berminat belajar stelah tuisyen bersamaku’.
